Ranked sixth all-time in wins in the NAIA, Grant Landy enters his 12th season as head coach of the Concordia women's soccer team. His squads have combined for a 190-44-14 record during his tenure and have won nine conference championships (eight straight), claimed three NAIA Region I titles, and made seven consecutive trips to the NAIA National Tournament.
Last year Landy helped guide the Cavs to an 18-2-2 record and a 10-0-0 mark in CCC play to extend the team's string of conference wins to 24 with the last 23 coming via shutout. The Cavs earned the No. 4 ranking in the final NAIA Women's Soccer Poll and opened the NAIA championships with a 2-0 win against Kansas Wesleyan before falling in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Martin Methodist in penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 tie after 110-minutes of indecisive action.
In 2006, the Cavaliers, who finished the season ranked No. 3 in the nation with a 20-2-2 record, won the Region I title and advanced to the NAIA Final Four, marking the third season out of the last four that the team has made it to the Final Four or better at nationals.
In 2005, the Cavaliers tallied 18 wins against five losses en route to reaching the NAIA quarterfinals before falling to No. 1 ranked Martin Methodist (Tenn.). The year before, as a No. 6 seed, the Cavs advanced to their first national championship game, dropping a 2-0 match against top-rated Lindsey Wilson.
The championship game in 2004 marked a four-year stretch where the Cavaliers extended its season further into the playoffs. Beginning in 2001 with its first NAIA national tournament game, a double-overtime defeat against Bellhaven (Miss.), Landy's team progressed to the quarterfinals in 2002 by recording its first national tournament win and towards the semifinals in 2003 with two national tournament victories before reaching the finals in 2004. Landy also helmed two of the longest winning streaks in NAIA history with 23 straight victories in 2002 for a tie second all-time and a 21-match winning streak in 2006, good for fourth all-time.
Landy began his coaching career in Eugene, Oregon, after a four-year playing career at Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo, where he received a B.A. in political science with a concentration in journalism. He led the Mustangs to NCAA Division II National Tournaments in 1987 and 1989 and was a two-time all-conference midfielder. He played professionally in Germany in 1991 and with the Portland Firebirds in 1995. After four years of coaching in the Eugene high school and club ranks, Landy moved to an assistant coach with the University of Oregon's women's soccer program in 1996.
Landy is an eight-time Cascade Conference Coach of the Year. Five times he has been named the NAIA Region I Coach of the Year and in 2004 and 2006, he was named the NSCAA NAIA Far West Coach of the Year. Landy teaches physical education courses in addition to his coaching duties at Concordia. He lives with his wife, Angela, a health teacher at David Douglas High School, in Wilsonville. They have two sons, Evan and Adam.
