HELENA, Mont.—The Concordia University volleyball team opened its season with five matches in three days in two cities this weekend.
After opening the trip with a 3-0 win over Montana State-Northern, the Cavaliers dropped the next four matches, including a pair of five-set marathons to Rocky Mountain and the University of Great Falls.
With the results, CU will arrive back in Portland with a 1-4 record but remain encouraged with the experienced gained from battling with quality opponents.
Concordia fell to Great Falls in five after holding a 2-1 lead to fall to 1-1 on the season. Rocky Mountain, a team which finished third in the Frontier Conference a year ago, defeated Concordia 3-1 in the afternoon game on Friday.
Another five-set match awaited the Cavs on Saturday morning as Montana Tech came back from a 2-1 deficit with a 15-12 win in the final frame while Carroll College, ranked No. 25 in the NAIA preseason poll, held off the Cavs with a 3-1 win in CU’s final game of the roadtrip.
Complete results will be available on Monday.
It’s disappointing to be 1-4 but we have a lot to build on that as we mixed a lot of newcomers into the games this weekend,” Concordia head coach Melanie Hambelton said. “The coaches really got a chance to see what people can do and what positions they are suited for so it was a positive weekend in terms of growth. The outcomes were certainly not what we wanted but we battled in each match against tough teams.”
