LEWISTON, Idaho—Having already tagged the No. 1-ranked Lewis-Clark State Warriors with one of its three losses this season, Concordia nearly replicated the feat in a Friday nightcap before falling 17-5 and 7-3 in non-league baseball action at Wolfe Field.
With the wins, LCSC improved to 39-3 this season while Concordia fell to 9-30.
The two squads wrap-up the four-game, three-day series with a single contest on Saturday. Opening pitch is set for noon for the finale.
The Cavaliers got off to a promising start in the opener with a pair of runs in the top of the first.
Calvin Nagy initiated the strike with a single up the middle, but was taken off the basepaths on a fielder’s choice off the bay of
Ryan Kolstad in the next at bat. A walk and a wild pitch put both CU runners in scoring position where
Brady Miletich and
Jon Houts followed with RBI singles.
The lead would prove to be short lived as the Warriors responded by taking the lead with three runs in the second and would quickly extend the gap with a four-spot in the third.
The Cavs managed a single run in the third with an RBI single from
Tony Flanagan to plate
Andrew Reid, who opened the frame with a double to left center, and two more runs in the ninth to complete the team’s scoring.
Stephen Foster took the win with 6.2 innings after relieving starter Tyrell Poggmeyer. Foster struck out seven while allowing two runs, one of which was earned, and eight hits. CU’s
Steven Taft was tagged for the loss after working the first six stanzas.
LCSC 1-0 lead in the second as Casini recorded an RBI after grounding out to CU shortstop
Mike Dickman.
The Cavs evened the score at the top of the next inning as Reid returned with a shot back to the pitcher’s mound for an RBI as
Curt Cosby raced home on the two-out play.
Concordia took its first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the fifth only to see LCSC return with four in the home half of the inning. With two outs, Reid smashed a double to left to start the spark. After an intentional walk to
Tommy Whalen, Miletich posted a double of his own with a shot to center to score both runners.
Holding on to a 5-3 lead, the Warriors used two hits and an error for an additional two-run cushion which would hold for the 7-3 final.
Josh O’Gorman lasted 7.0 innings on the mound for the Cavs, striking out seven batters and allowing nine hits.
Zac Manor pitched a clean eighth to close out the pitching duties for the Cavaliers.
Cody Fassold allowed three runs and seven hits over 6.0 innings of work for the win. Henry Buenrostro picked up a save for the Warriors with three innings of two-hit work.
With the final hit count toed at 9-9, Reid and Cosby both went 3-for-4 to lead the Cavs at the plate.
