PORTLAND, Ore.—Five Cavaliers earned Cascade Collegiate Conference Athlete of the Week honors in their respective sports, the league announced on Monday.
Jed Dalton and
Madeline Jarrett swept the male and female golf honors;
Catherine Sims and
Amanda Federici swept the Female Athlete of the Week awards for track & field.
Renee Santos was named the CCC’s Pitcher of the Week for softball and
Chris Jaime was the league's choice for Baseball Player of the Week.
Behind a conference sweep at the College of Idaho Invitational, Dalton and Jarrett turned medalist performances into the CCC Player of the Week accolades.
Dalton, a freshman from Seattle, Wash., fired three straight 1-under 71s to win the College of Idaho Invitational by two strokes for his first collegiate win. Dalton also helped lead the Cavs to the team title as Concordia held off the host Coyotes by 13 strokes. It’s the second such award for Dalton, who also earned the honor on Nov. 2, 2009.
Jarrett, a sophomore from Portland, Ore., won her first collegiate tournament with a four-stroke win at the event. Jarrett opened with the lowest round of the two-day tournament by carding a one-over 73 en route to a seven-over 223 over 54 holes of play. Jarrett led CU to its fifth team title of the year as Concordia golfers snared the top five spots on the leaderborad. Jarrett took the league’s Player of the Week honor in the first week of eligibility last fall. Her second selection is the team’s seventh of the year.
Sims, a junior from Portland, Ore., won three events at the Lewis & Clark Invitational on Saturday. She won the 400 with a 56.46, the No. 7 mark in the NAIA so far this season, to slash .20 off the previous Concordia school record in the event and earn an NAIA automatic qualifier. Sims also won the 200 with a 25.41, just off her school record of 25.20 set earlier in the season, as well as taking gold in the long jump with a 17-9 1/2.
Federici, a junior from Aloha, Ore., set a personal record with a 160-0 in the hammer at the Lewis & Clark Invitational to turn her NAIA provisional status into an automatic mark. Her toss is ranked No. 2 in the CCC and No. 3 all-time on the CU performance list. Competing for the first time in the discus as a collegiate athlete, Federici earned her second CCC Championship qualifying mark.
Santos, a junior from Portland, Ore., did not allow a run in 14 innings of work as she posted shutouts against Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho. With 28 strikeouts, Santos struck out an average of two batters per inning, while allowing just four hits over that span. After allowing three hits to EOU on Friday, Santos tossed a one-hitter against the Coyotes on Saturday for her sixth shutout of the season.
Jaime, a senior catcher from San Diego, Calif., hit .571 in five games played this week. Out of his eight hits, five were recorded as doubles as the senior finished with a .929 slugging percentage. He drove in six runs and walked on three occasions for a .647 on base percentage.
