GAME 1 RECAP
PORTLAND, Ore.—An RBI triple by
Andrew Reid in the bottom of the sixth turned out to be the game-winning run as Concordia defeated College of Idaho 6-5 in the second game of an NAIA West Region doubleheader played at Joe Etzel Field on Saturday.
With the win, Concordia moved to 3-6 on the season while C of I fell to 11-5.
After the Coyotes scored three in the second with the aid of a two-run double down the left-field line by No. 9 hole hitter Brett Ward, Concordia bounced back with three of their own in the third as
Sean Myrom provided the damaging blow with a two-run singled to plate teammates
Derek Kirkland and
Ryan Kolstad.
In the next stanza, the Cavaliers put two more on the board on a homer from
Jon Houts with
Mike Dickman at second following a lead-off double to take its first lead.
Replicating the feat, the Yotes countered with two in the fifth on the strength of three triples, a walk and a sacrifice fly by Jordan Lanman to square the game at 5-5 in the seven-inning affair.
Coming out of the bullpen,
Zac Manor faced the minimum in the final two innings to set up the Concordia offense to snare the go-ahead run in the sixth. Dickman opened the inning with a bunt single and was immediately followed by Reid, who smashed a triple to right field for the game-winning RBI.
The Coyotes outhit the Cavs 10-9 with Jarel Lewis leading the way by going 3-for-4 at the plate. Nine different players recorded a hit for the Cavs with Myrom and Houts registering two RBI and Dickman scoring a pair of runs.
Manor picked up the win by not allowing a run in the final 2.2 innings. Manor issued two walks and allowed two hits while striking out one. College of Idaho reliever Levi Mitchum was charged with the loss, giving up three hits and one run while pitching the final two innings.
The two teams will revive the series on Sunday with a second doubleheader. Opening pitch is set for 11 a.m. at Joe Etzel Field.
