OLYMPIA, Wash.—In a battle of teams with the top two scorers in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, Evergreen State defeated Concordia 94-75 on Saturday night.
With the win, Evergreen State, ranked No. 22 in the latest NAIA Division II poll, improved to 18-8 overall and 11-5 in CCC games while Concordia fell to 15-12 on the season and 5-11 in league contests.
Concordia wraps up its regular season at home against No. 3-rated Oregon Tech on February 19. Opening tip against the Owls is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the Cavalier Gymnasium.
Alex Tiefenthaler, the CCC’s second leading scorer at 19.1 points per game, trumped his season average with a Concordia best 24 points after connecting on 10-of-20 attempts.
Evergreen State’s Nate Menafee, the leading scorer in the conference and second-highest scorer in the NAIA at 26.7 points per game, tallied 31 in the win against the Cavaliers. Menafee hit 10-of-15 attempts including 3-of-7 from three-point territory.
Concordia held a slight edge at the half with the score 45-43, but managed just 30 points in the second as the Geoducks rolled to the 19-point win.
After shooting at a 50 percent (19-of-38) in the first half, Concordia went cold from the floor in the second, making just 9-of-28 shots for a 32.1 percent rate. Meanwhile, the Geoducks upper their percentage from 55.6 (15-of-27) to a scolding 67.9 (19-of-28) percent from the first to the second half to finish with a 61.8 percent success rate from the floor.
Behind Tiefenthaler’s team-high 24,
Dustin Hiebert added 10, Jourdan Sweeney nine and
Greg McFarland eight for the Cavs.
Josh Troyer added 16 points off the bench for Evergreen State.
