Taylor Leads Concordia at Willamette's Charles Bowles Invite

SALEM, Ore.—Concordia sophomore Alice Taylor placed sixth overall out of more than 200 hundred runner to lead Concordia at the Willamette University’s Charles Bowles Invitational Bush’s Pasture Park in Salem.

Taylor set a school record with a time of 17 minutes 42.84 seconds to place sixth out of 241 individual runners.

Azusa Pacific’s Jacky Kipwambok won the women’s race virtually unchallenged with a 16:41.42. Concordia (Cal.) runner Rocio Pelayo placed second with a 17:26.22. Taylor had previously run a 17:42 at the Northwest Christian Invite to set the school’s 5,000-meter cross country record.

Concordia’s No. 2-4 runners all cracked 20 minutes in the race as Samantha Robert placed 49th overall with an 18:53.71, Lauren Moran placed 67th with a 19:15.21 and Junia Limage placed 111th with a 19:53.28.

Just missing the barrier, CU’s final scorer, Maggie Pesanti crossed the line in 20:09.51 in 129th place. Also competing for the Cavs, Savannah Walruff finished in 164th place with a time of 21:11.41.

The Cavalier women, ranked No. 13 in the latest NAIA poll, placed 11th out of the 23-team field with 279 points. Azusa Pacific, the No. 1-rated team in the NAIA, easily took the team crown with a meet-low 35 points. Biola finished second as a team with 79 points while Concordia (Cal.) finished third with 139 points. Eight of the top 20 teams in the NAIA were represented in the race.

Martin Romero-Clark led the CU men after covering the 8,000-meter course in 25:43.59 for 73rd place. Moments behind, Charles Cummings finished in 82nd place after steeping over the finish with a time of 25:43.29. Dylan Zitzer set a personal record with a 26:17.06 to finish in the 99th position.

Rounding out the men’s team were Zach Ginn (114th, 26:31.27); Josh Burrus (154th, 26:59.28), Brandon Kohler (156th, 27:04.70) and Cordero Cisneros (180th, 27:26.61).

The men’s squad finished in 12th place out of 25 teams with 353 points. Southern Oregon, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, took the team title with 41 points, edging seventh-ranked Embry-Riddle by eight points.

APU’s Abednego Magut cruised to the individual championship with a 23:49.20, defeating SOU’s runner-up David Laney (24:13.30) by more than 20 seconds.
